Build Excitement to Bring Back Patients

Adam Decker

What do you do to get patients to come back?  What is in your business plan to retain the patients you work so hard to get?  How are you leveraging this into new referrals?

Recently we were putting together some marketing materials which led me to reflect on our business.  We came up with a headline theme – let’s make sure our clients are excited to be working with us!  We want them to not only be pleased with our work, but to also look forward to meeting with us.  It’s an added bonus if they are also advocates for us.  This theme can apply to your dental practice too.  Get your patients excited to want to visit your office.  Create an environment where they want to refer their friends to you.

So what will it take to get your patients excited to visit?  For Veros Dental, we reflected on what motivates us to refer our clients to a particular person or firm.  We have regular opportunities to refer legal work, insurance, and marketing and website design, among other things.  We took a look at those whom we refer to most frequently and contemplated as to why we do so.  We came up with the following: a) they do a great job technically, b) they communicate well, c) they make the client comfortable, d) they are trustworthy, and e) they reciprocate by referring their clients to us.  When we refer to these people, we’re excited to do so because we’re confident they will do a great job.

For your practice, identify what you do well to generate excitement, and what you could improve upon.  Not sure?  Reflect on what motivates you to refer to someone.  Does your practice encompass these qualities?

Excitement doesn’t have to be expensive either.  Having a pleasant staff goes a long way.  How you and your staff communicate is important too.  And some of the subtle or not so subtle physical aspects of your office will also help.  For example, a dental practice in Indianapolis bakes a few loaves of bread each day in their break room – the aroma helps create a more inviting experience.

Generating this excitement can help increase patient loyalty.  If you give your patients to something to stimulate discussion with their family and friends, you’ll generate new referrals too.

Now that’s exciting!

Adam: this is great stuff! I always enjoy reading your posts.

People always want to be around folks that are happy. It rubs off on them. Being excited also rubs off on people… they can hear it in your voice over the phone. I love to hear the front desk calling my home. The person calling is VERY happy and clearly loves her job (at least that’s what she portrays in her voice).

    Great post!
